Key Concepts & Terminology

A handful of words do most of the work in RØDECaster Studio.

Your library

• Podcast: one recording, with its transcript, summary, compositions and speakers, filed in a folder in the sidebar. See Organise Your Library.
• People: your contact book of hosts and guests. Name a voice once and it's recognised in later recordings. A speaker is that voice in one recording; click the name above a paragraph to link the two. See People, Contacts & Voice Recognition.
• Recently Deleted: podcasts and people you delete wait 30 days here. Compositions deleted in the editor go straight away. See Delete, Recover & Start Over.
• Local copy: the podcast's audio on this computer, needed for playing, editing and exporting. Remove copy frees the space and keeps your edits, Restore fetches it back. See Local Copies & Storage.

Originals and compositions

Nothing you do overwrites the recording. The Original is that recording as it arrived, read only, so there's always something to go back to.

A composition is a saved cut. Your first edit with Original open creates Composition 1; after that, edits change the cut you're on. See Compositions & Versions.

Reset Podcast, on a podcast's right-click menu, throws every composition away and rebuilds from the recording. That one is permanent.

Editing the transcript

• Edit like a doc: editing the episode by editing its transcript. Delete a run of words and the audio closes around it. See Edit Like a Doc.
• Start Editing: unlocking a recording so it's yours to work on, one recording at a time, and it sticks. Free through the beta, as often as you like.
• Pending edit: a change waiting in the transcript but not yet part of the cut. Apply commits it, Discard bins it. See Review, Apply & Discard Edits.
• View changes: the eye in the top bar, showing your cut against the original. Right-click a struck-through run to Restore it.

RØDIE, the assistant

RØDIE is a tab in the panels on the right. Ask for an edit in your own words, or click one of the Suggested actions, then review what it leaves pending. Create a short highlight trims a duplicate of your composition, leaving your own edit alone. See RØDIE, Your Editing Assistant.

Sound and mix

The Mixer gives you a fader per speaker, and Auto balances everyone in a tap.

APHEX polishes the whole mix with three dials, and Spatial places each speaker around the listener; wear headphones for that one.

Effects is the repair bench: tame breaths, level background noise, cut reverb, repair plosives, even out volume with Word Leveling.

Music is split from speech as a recording opens, and gets its own row in the timeline, the waveform under the transcript. The speaker row shows who talks where.

Finishing up

• Export: your finished file, as Audio, Transcript or Timeline. Preset matches it to the platform you're publishing to. See Export & Publish.
• RØDE Cloud: the service behind your RØDE account. Your podcasts and edits follow you to any computer you sign in on; local audio doesn't, so signing out clears it. Sending chosen recordings straight from a RØDECaster Pro II or Duo is coming. See Import & Upload Recordings.
